In my time in the news business, I have covered many protests: some peaceful, some violent. At a late 60’s Vietnam War protest in Denver, I ended up in the hospital after being hit in the head by a thrown rock. (I guess they didn’t like the media back then as well) Even now, in retirement, I plan to cover another protest on June 14th (Flag Day). This is an extension of the “Hands Off” gatherings around the country to protest Elon Musk and the Trump administration's actions to dismantle much of our government.
This new event is dubbed “No Kings,” and the Website lists protest locations around the country. The one I’m “covering” is three blocks from my retirement community. I will be there with my video camera, trying to capture the concerns of those gathered. The previous “Hands Off” protest in the same location saw at least 100 people of all ages.
When I say I’ll be “covering” the event, at this point, I plan to share video highlights and perhaps some sound bites via susbstack and social media.
You may be thinking, What good will that do? Video highlights will most likely be seen on that evening's newscasts. Well, it might just make me feel like I’m using my camera and editing skills to add one more voice to the growing concerns of the direction Trump is taking our country.
Here is a link to find a No Kings location near you. Do you plan to join the crowd? Please leave a comment as to why or why not.
That’s 30…
I live at Ann’s Choice Retirement Community in Warminster, PA and we had permission to protest outside of our gate. About 7 residents participated and stood under some trees near the gate with their signs.
At our community, we have a resident-run website that I help keep updated and there is a section on the home page for residents to post ads or requests so I had this bright idea about a week before June 14 to ask our webmaster to add a post asking people to join the No Kings protest. It never occurred to me that he was a diehard Trump supporter and he responded no in not so nice terms. Lesson learned. We are not allowed to put political posts on our shelves outside the apartments or to wear inappropriate clothing.
